Cucumbers are scientifically known as Cucumis sativus and belong to the same botanical family as melon (including watermelon and cantaloupe) and squashes (including summer squash, winter squash, zucchini and pumpkin). There are three main varieties of cucumber: slicing, pickling, and burpless.
